A Family Tradition of Motorcycling

In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the country and Franklin Roosevelt was elected president. That same year, "Pap" Twigg founded Twigg Cycles in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he sold refurbished bicycles out of his mother’s kitchen. The rest, as they say, is history.

In 1936 Pap began selling Indian Motorcycle®, and over the next several decades, Pap’s reputation for honesty and good customer service helped Twigg Cycles grow to represent almost every brand of motorcycle sold in the nation. Milestones included…

• 1964: Twigg became one of the first in the country to sell Yamaha motorcycles.

• 1975: The Suzuki franchise was added.

• 1989: Twigg acquired a local Kawasaki dealer and added to their product line.

• 1993: The Polaris® franchise was picked up.

• 1996: Twigg acquired a local Honda® dealership, completing the Big Five lineup.

• 1998: Twigg Cycles moved to their current location in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Today, Twigg Cycles is run by Pap’s grandson Mike Twigg and his wife Robin Twigg. Mike and Robin began working for Pap back in 1982, and in 1989, when Pap decided to retire, Mike and Robin bought the dealership. Today, their son Brock Twigg and daughter Stefanie Twigg also work in the business.

A SUCCESSFUL HISTORY IN MOTORCYCLE RACING

Motorcycle racing has always been in the Twigg family. Pap Twigg raced at Daytona when half the track ran along the blacktop of Florida Highway A1A and the other half ran right up the beach at low tide. Mike Twigg’s dad Don raced professionally for BSA Motorcycles and finished 19th at the Daytona 200 on a BMW boxer.

Mike Twigg, who began going to Daytona, Florida at age 6, followed in their footsteps and became one of the top 100 motocross racers in the US—racing the AMA supercross series and outdoor Nationals professionally from 1978 - 1983

MARYLAND’S OLDEST MOTORCYCLE DEALER

Today, Twigg Cycles’ state dealer number is M0002 (there is currently no dealer in business with M0001), making them one of the oldest and longest-surviving motorcycle dealers in the state of Maryland. Their success is due in no small part to the ongoing commitment of the Twigg family and their continued belief that the customer always comes first.
